Week 15: Final Essay: Understand Peers and Broaden My Point of View

Understand Peers and Broaden My Point of View

I selected three articles, each of them is considered by Woohyuk Cho, Sarmita, and Seokwoo Hong. The first article is about women violence and the measurement in Indonesia from Woohyuk Cho’s blog and as a woman I can understand the feeling of Indonesian women. The second article is from Sarmita’s blog, which is talking about virtual reality exposure therapy to overcome phobia, and I selected it because I also have similar experience regarding arachnophobia. Last article is taken from a blog of Seokwoo Hong that is about Amazon indigenous people who are threatened by federal, and the problem is what I most interested since high schoolFrom those reasons I chose their articles and added some my opinion on them.

First of all, I read the article called, “Survey finds widespread violence against women” from Woohyuk Cho’s blog in group 1 because of the reason that I can sympathize the difficulty of Indonesian women and their action. According to The Jakarta Post, they say that the percentage of women who experienced violence from physical to sexual is over 33%. For this reason, Indonesian women politicians try to reinforce the law to protect the violence in order to decrease the problem. Regarding this action, Woohyuk Cho said it’s not fair to specially treat women because they are just women, by describing the foreign example of woman army and his experience. He thinks that it’s the discrimination caused by the stereotype and physical differences. In my opinion, I cannot agree with his contention because I think women should be protected more than men. As Woohyuk Cho said, women are weaker than men physically, so women have been victims of many criminals and they don’t have much strength to resist them. Also, I have also many scary experience walking alone preceding a certain man, being with a strange man in elevator, and other similar things. Woohyuk Cho said that the content of the article regarding measure to woman violence is not proper one, but I think it needs to be taken.

Secondly, I chose the article named “How virtual reality spiders are helping people face their arachnophobia” from the blog of Sarmita in group 2, since I have also arachnophobia and experienced the exposure therapy. According to the article from ABC News, exposure therapy is the treatment to overcome the phobia by exposing people to their source of fear and relaxing their muscles. Moreover, the article says, nowadays the virtual reality exposure therapy becomes one of the effective methods. Sarmita said that she has an arachnophobia and wants to overcome it using the virtual reality exposure therapy. She is looking forward to getting a fine. Similarly I also have phobia against spiders and a few years ago I’ve gotten an exposure therapy and it was awful. Even though it is an effective method, it is only effective as long as people are exposed to the fear slowly enough. Because I progressed the treatment too quickly, I advise Sarmita that she doesn’t have to rush to beat phobia. Sarmita and the article think the virtual reality exposure therapy will offer many positive effects, but I recommend them to pay close attention to it.

Lastly, I read the article, “Indigenous groups, Amazon’s best land stewards, under federal attack”, from Seokwoo Hong’s blog in group 3 because of my interest toward the protection of Amazon indigenous tribe. According to Mongabay article, it says that federal government attempts to develop region of Amazon protected by indigenous people, and against them indigenous people are struggling to preserve the region. As for it, Seokwoo Hong thinks that people should protect the Amazon region of indigenous people for cultural diversity and environment. I also agree to the opinion of Seokwoo Hong because nowadays many minority groups are destroyed and gone by the thoughtless development. I think minority groups are culture and heritage in themselves and they influence many good effects on the environment. Seokwoo Hong and I don’t want Brazil government remove indigenous people as the article says to protect them and the environment.

To sum up, I selected those three articles for the following reasons : the sympathy to Indonesian girls, experience of phobia, and concern for the environment and indigenous people. I oppose to Woohyuk Cho’s opinion that the special treatment to women is unfair at the first article. Besides, I understand Sarmita’s experience and have her some tips at the second article. Finally, I consent to Seokwoo Hong’s contention that indigenous people should be conserved for many reasons at the third article. It was a good opportunity to understand peers’ thoughts and broaden my point of view.

Follow Me: Hayao Miyazaki: "Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki refuses to use AI deep learning and CGI for new feature"

According to the IBT(International Business Times), Hayao Miyazaki coming out of the retirement about 3 years after the announcement is working on a new film and for this, he learned about Artificial Intelligence more, but he finally refused it. Hayao Miyazaki finished his resting time and started new animation film, "Boro the Caterpillar", and to describe the caterpillar as natural and real he decided to turn his working style form hand drawing into CGI(Computer Generated Imagery). In addition, in order to acquire it more efficiently, he met Nobuo Kawakami, the chairperson of the  Dwango Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and encountered the system realizing the character's imaginary movements and the sample of the programmed zombies. However, the sample offended Miyazaki recalling the neighboring physically challenged people and he decided to come back to his original working style: hand drawn illustration. To sum up, even though Hayao Miyazaki at first decided to use CGI or AI program to animate his new character, after he visited AI laboratory and encountered them deeply, he has given up and returned.

The news that Hayao Miyazaki is coming back is so impressing to me since he is one of my favorite movie diresctors because of three reasons: beautiful illustrations, implied meaning of scenes, and background music. Miyazaki tends to create each scene of films by drawing them himself and for that reason, his movies convey warm and lyrical emotion. Moreover he always suggests certain social problem and desired world view through his film, as in "Spirited away" he dealt with the problem of prostitution, materialism, and environmental pollution through features and behaviors of characters.
Finally, the back ground music of his films amplify atmosphere and mix with scenes so well that the music tends to represent the movie itself. By hearing the news saying that Hayao Miyazaki breaks out of the retirement, I have been looking forward to watch his movie entailing elaborate scenes of the film, touching messages toward us, and supportive music.

Junhee – We’re gonna go to a bowling center, which is really close to our University, and the name is Kakao.
Everyone –So, let’s go!!!

Main
Junhee
Bowling is a sport which a player rolls or throws a bowling ball towards targets, called pins. Bowling is originated from ancient Egypt or Roman Empire, so it has quite long history. There are two main types of bowling, one is pin bowling, which is usually played indoors, the other is target bowling, which is usually played outdoors. Today we are gonna learn pin bowling.
The name of this bowling center is kakao, and you should pay 3000 won per game, but since we are SKKU students, there is 500 won discount and you should rent a special pair of shoes and it is 1500 won, and after 9pm, they turn on all the lights and turns a whole center like a dancing club and we can order some beer.
In order to play bowling, you have to wear special kind of shoes. Bowling shoes makes your foot slide smoothly when throwing the ball. You never can play bowling without bowling shoes, because if you wear street shoes, it will gonna cause a lot of strain on you shoulder and your knee, and this will increase a risk of injury. We can buy or rent shoes, but since we don’t have enough money, so we are gonna rent the shoes.
Again, we can rent or buy the balls, but since we don’t have enough money, we gonna rent balls Advantage of buying ball is personalization, and making it easy to spin. But we are gonna rent some balls, and we should choose among these balls. Choosing balls with proper weight is really important for your performance and your risk of injury.

Juyeon
To play bowling well, it is important to learn appropriate steps and swings.
First of all, there are several steps in bowling. Most of all, people mostly use 4steps and 5steps. In bowling, steps play a key role as a run-up, in the sense, 5steps put force on one more step more than 4steps. Because the procedure is sophisticated and takes a lot of concentration, we’ll gonna start with 4steps.
4steps literally mean 4 feet steps, and each step has different style stride, and form of feet. First of all, the stance, preparation posture. Make feet gathered like number eleven and bend your knees slightly. It is good to bend down your upper body, as well.
The first step starts with your right foot. Before we go further, there is something we should consider. The order of the foot step is different between left-handed and right-handed people, and right-handed people start with their right foot as the first step. We’ll start with the right step, so if you are left-handed you can take it first with the left side. Toward with comfortable stride, not so big or not so small. The important thing you should be aware is that all steps including the first one, you have to put weight forward.
The second one is similar to the first one. Stretch the left foot moderately same as right. When combining with swing, the second step will be the most strained stage because of the weight of the ball. For this reason it is important to maintain your balance of the body.
The third step is taken when the ball reaches the highest point, and also it is a prior stage to the final step which can make run-up. Stretch your right foot with a similar stride as the second one.
And the last step, the forth step is much more similar to sliding rather than taking a step. With a 1.5times of ordinary stride, slide the left leg putting the weight. At the same time the right foot is sliding toward inside of the left leg. At this moment, landing should be taken at the same time, so it is important to make your balance.

Junghoon
Then I will show you how to grip a bowling ball. First, put in your thumb in this hole and put middle finger in the left side and ring finger in the right side. It’s like this. This is how to grip a bowling ball.
Then, Let’s apply Swing motion to these 4 steps. There is each swing motion for each step. Before the first step begins, there is preparation action which is called ‘Address’. ‘Address is carried out in ‘stance location’. Grip a ball with right hand and hold your elbow at your right side of waist. Make the angle of your arm 90 degree. Then, make your right palm face the sky and support your right hand with your left hand.
Now It is First step. First swing motion of First step is ‘Push away’. ‘Push away’ is pushing out a ball while stepping on right foot. At the summit of orbit, leave your left hand from your right hand.
Second swing is ‘Down Swing’. As soon as you leave your left hand from your right hand, down swing begins. Take a next step along with down swing of your right hand, and naturally stretch your left hand to the left side
Next third swing is ‘Back Swing’. Relax your right shoulder and swing back to the height of your shoulder using movement of pendulum. Take a next step along the back swing.
Fourth swing is ‘Forward Swing’. Accelerate your ball forward until rolling a ball. At this moment, slide with your left foot with bending your left knee and stretch your right foot behind your left foot.
Next motion is ‘release’ without any further step. At the bottom of swing, take your thumb out of bowling ball and roll a ball. When you do ‘release’, lower your posture and bend your knees.

Minho
I will let you know some rules of bowling
The rules of bowling are so easy.
You just roll the ball without crossing the foul line with the black color of the lane, and knock down the pins.
One person will hit ten frames per game, and in a frame, one person can roll a ball twice unless he or she hits a strike.
However, exceptionally in the tenth frame, you can rolls two more times if you hit a Strike, and one more time if you hit a Spare.
Then, what does strike and spare mean here?
Strike means that you knock down ten pins in the first trial of each fame, and Spare means that you do not knock down all pins in the first trial and knock down all the other pins in the second trial.
These are the basic rules of bowling, and next, I’ll show you how to calculate the score.
In fact, the score is calculated by the computer, but it will be better to know how to calculate it by yourself, so I will explain it briefly.
Basically, one point per one pin. However, the Spare and Strike are slightly different in scoring. In the case of Spare, the number of pins fall down in the first trial of the next frame is added to the point, and in the case of Strike, the sum of the number of pins that fall down in the first trial and second trial is added to the point.
If so, how many points do you get if you hit a spare in the first frame and eight pins in the first attempt on the second frame?
Yes, it is 18 points.
You can calculate the score easily in this way.
Then now before we go to the actual game, let me tell you about some manners of bowling.
There is a section in the bowling alley where you step on it until you roll the ball. This is called the approach.
Be sure to wear bowling shoes when you go up to the approach, and if the person next to you is on the approach to roll the ball, you have to roll the ball after he rolls the ball.
Also, if you go up to the approach and stay for too long, people in next lane cannot play. So you have to roll the ball quickly and go down from the approach.
These are the basic etiquette you should know to play bowling, and now I will show you the real game.

End
Minho
Today we’ve learned how to play bowling and we have lots of fun.
Juyeon
You guys can also come here and enjoy play bowling.
Everyone
Bye Bye~!!

Week 10: Blog post 2c: Europe: Austria: Austrian President calls on all women to wear headscarves in solidarity with Muslims to fight 'rampant Islamophobia'

According to the Independent article, in Austria there are many debates and protests against the government regarding the President's call about the wear of headscarves on all  Muslim woman, and the partial prohibition of full-face Islamic veils, and it is the trend for overall Europe, not only for Austria. There have been several trouble with Islamophobia, so President urges Islamic women to put on headscarves, but some party member and students refuse it due to the freedom of expression. Meanwhile the Freedom Party pushed ahead the law partially restricting religious symbols, such as full-face Islamic veils or Christian cross, to prevent the terror attacks. The phenomenon doesn't occur only in Austria, but in Europe generally, France firstly having implemented a kind of law which have made Belgium, Bulgaria and others follow it. To sum up, there are several controversial concerning enforcing or restricting people to wear religious item across Europe as well as Austria.

I have believed in Christianity since my birth, but there have been some people exposing displeasure to me due to my religion, and even slandering, then it gave me a mental trauma. I didn't know there are people who don't like Christian before I met that some people at school, and noticed a few of them hate me just because I am Christian. When I was 18 there were students who abused me in the presence of me and insult the religion and people surrounding me. The time became trauma for me and since then I have hesitated to express my belief to people and also felt a sense of guilt for myself about hesitating. There are many conflicts of opinions regarding religion and I also experienced it and get attacked by some people directly criticizing my credit, and it still affects my state of mental.

Week 10: Blog post 2b: Europe: Hungary: Large protest in support of Hungary's Soros-backed university

The article from the BBC deals with the demonstration of Hungary citizens against the government, describing the new legislation of government, the target university, CEU, of the law, and presents condition of the demonstrators. Hungarian government introduced new rule and passed it to the Higher Education Act, meaning that the CEU, Central European University, which is registered in the US and famous for democratic property, will not be able to continue working in Budapest. CEU is an university founded and sponsored billionaire philanthropist George Soros who has a tense relationship with PM Orban who supported the abolition of the university. Against it, unprecedented demonstration is held by students, their families, and many other elders or adults and they are marching peacefully and chanting the slogans. To sum up, currently in Hungary there are many protesters against the government that is aiming at the shut-down of CEU, the university registered in US not Hungary.

As in Hungary, in Korea, there have been a lot of demonstration to recover democracy and I participated in them several times, requesting transparent reign, wise policy for welfare, and offering proper education of history. There was an accident last year, where the president operated the country at the sake of particular person, so I insisted that operation of government be transparent and impartial. In addition, usage of taxes collected from nations haven't been efficient and wasted, so I urged to allocate budget considering the people's need and discomfort. Moreover, government tried to offer students history textbooks written by government which contain distorted and biased contents, so I protested publication of them actively. To protect and restore democratic Korea, I tried hard suggesting fair management of country, proper distribution of taxes for people, and right schooling of our past.

Week 9: Blog post 2a: Europe: Germany: 'Synlight,' An Artificial Sun In Germany, Could Generate Alternative Fuel

The article called, "'Synlight,' An Artificial Sun In Germany, Could Generate Alternative Fuel", says that the Germany is spending efforts trying to develop alternative green energy, hydrogen and to offset the drawbacks of hydrogen planning to use the "synlight" they are testing now. German Aerospace Center is looking for chemical applications to create hydrogen and hydrogen is often called green energy source because of nonexistence of carbon dioxide which makes the earth warm. However hydrogen has a problem that it requires lots of energy to produce it. In order to overcome this deficiency, Germany is trying to utilize the energy of "synlight", the artificial and powerful light which is as intense as radiation of sun and more reliable than the real sun. To sum up, Germany is looking for the reproduction of hydrogen by using the artificial but intense enough sun while overcoming the main shortcomings of hydrogen.

I have been interested in the problem of environment, especially alternative energy which is sustainable, so when I was 17, I participated in course studying development of several alternative energy using the sun, the ocean current, and gas from the machine operated. First of all, the sun is the most ubiquitous and lasting material, but has limited application because of low efficiency, so if there is amplification device, I thought we can use it more extensively. Similarly, the current is always present wherever the sea is, and it has critical feature that there is a tidal basin that can operate the motor which can make energy. Finally, the most I thought likely energy source was gas from the equipment because if we could make suitable chemical reaction, the discharge of machines can be reorganized to make energy, not being a trash of the air. I have thought the most important factor of the alternative energy is prevalence, and for these reasons I still would like to develop the solar energy, mechanism of the ocean, and the discharge from the appliance or commercial machine.

Week 6: Discussion: Art:Photography: Marc Riboud: Europe: France: "The Ultimate Confrontation: The Flower and the Bayonet"

This photo, "The Ultimate Confrontation: The Flower and the Bayonet", was taken by photographer Mark Riboud on October, 1967 when the Vietnam antiwar demonstration was held in Washington. Since then it have become iconic photo for peace.

Given the current Korea situation where the several strained relations are lasting, this photo I think can encourage people to deal with the problem more flexibly and peacefully not aggressively.

Week 4: Blog post 1c: South America: Dominica: Dominica and Brazil Network for Improved Water Resources Management

The GIS news says that the DOWASCO's, The Dominica Water and Sewerage Company, workshops for water management were held in collaboration with Brazil on March 27th and 28th and focused on the management of water resources and providing clean water for all citizens.  These two workshops dealt with the theme that they are to aim at management of ground water as well as that of surface water to preserve them and reduce soil erosion or siltation of them. In addition, they also took into account the importance of finding sustainable solutions, access to clean and potable water at reasonable costs. They stated that this will be promising because it will be provided for not only all citizens including the poor but also the generations to come. To sum up, Dominica is struggling to administer the water resources and to ensure the current and future nations to easily use and consume sanitary water in cooperation with Brazil.

When I was in high school, I have watched some documentaries covering the problem of water shortage in many developing countries, and it impressed me to help them, such as to support them financially, to encourage people to participate in, and to save water consumption. The first reason of their poor access to clean and plentiful water was the lack of facilities to pump up the water or to purify dirty water, so I started to fund money for them. Moreover, I have encouraged people to be involved in the campaigns which are aimed at paying attention to people with poor water provision and helping them practically. Besides, another thing I think important was to economize water usage because even though it seems so trivial that can't be helpful directly, it's the most easy and fundamental step to preserve water resources and provide for poor people.  By doing these activities, I realized that it is important to be of help to people who are isolated from pure water that I took for granted, so I still actively engage in diverse activities to provide material aid, to draw people to join together, and control the use of water since then.

Week 3: Blog post 1b: North America: Haiti: Desperate Haitians living in caves, eating toxic plants in post-hurricane Haiti

According to the Miami Herald article titled : "Desperate Haitians living in caves, eating toxic plants in post-hurricane Haiti", even after six months of the hurricane Matthew, there are still many refugees who can't maintain their normal lives and the aid is necessary because of destruction of their crops, livestock, and houses, lack of food or water, and decrease of emergency aid. To begin with, the article says that about 240 people were found having been living in a mountain cave since the attack of hurricane as they lost their means of living and shelters. Moreover, there were a few people who had died by eating fruits and foliage known to be poisonous to struggle to their starvation. What is worse, since significant time passed after the disaster, the emergency aid that had been supplied is decreasing, and thus several relief groups, such as Food For The Poor, plan to send them food and necessities and urge us to get more interested in them. To sum up, the article states far from where we live, there are still many people struggling to live and many ruins to be repaired, and they need help for their shelters, poor environment to find food, and substantial aid.

In 2012, when I was in high school, two huge hurricane attacked Korea one after another, and because of the unusual event, there were many damages around me : casualties, damage of property, and anxiety. According to the news report, there were about 25 people who died or are missing, and because of the severity, most of all schools including ours were closed. In addition, as well as the overall damage on the properties of agricultural or fishing industries, the elementary school besides our school was caved in with their side walls and our school suffered blackout and leakage of rain from the ceiling. However, instead of these damages, what made me scared most was the anxiety about what will happen to us, or whether we can overcome it without any harms. Even though the long time passed, there remain some realization that the natural disaster is horrible accident in the aspects of life of humankind, the private or public properties, and emotional pressure of nation.

Week 2: Blog Post 1a: North America: Guatemala: Fire hits Guatemala children's shelter, killing at least 22

According to the ABC News concerning the damage and problem of the accident that a blaze swept Guatemala childrens' shelter, this not only caused dozens of casualties, but also revealed several problems : poor management of living conditions and non-compliance with the government.  The accident on March 8th was so disastrous that at least 22girls were dead and many other children were brought to the hospital because of injuries like burn. Rodas, the head of welfare agency, said that the facility housed more than 800 youths against the norm that official capacity is 500 people, and also even men who are over 18 were still housed in the shelter. In addition, the shelter violated the statement of government that youths having the criminal records should be separated from other children , and thus some children were having a hard time. To sum up, this tragedy broke out not accidentally, but as the result of problem regarding improper management : poor conditions for living safely and disobedience to government guidlines, and finally caused heavy casualties.

4years ago, when I had a chance to volunteer at the children's shelter near my home, I experienced some poor environment for children such as lack of equipment, sanitation and labor to care them enough. Firstly, there weren't enough materials like desks, books, or other necessities to be used by all children, so they couldn't utilize the facilities or had to wait for a while for their turn. Also, state of hygiene was not adjust for growing children because the vantilation and water supply system were too old to make the environment clear. Furthermore, even though there were several teachers and volunteer students who are kind and hardworking, there was still lack of hands to care and pay enough attention to children one by one. By spending summer time working at the facility, I noticed that the more attention and supports are needed for shelters equipped with sufficient facilities for children to be run hygienically.
